Mid West Simon – Social Grocery
Food poverty, along with the associated hardships, presents a complex challenge. Over the years, Mid West Simon Community has committed significant resources to address this issue (we have been providing a food bank service in the Mid West region since 2014). Our latest endeavour aims to enhance access to nutritious food while providing a holistic and empowering service to those in need.
A Social Enterprise Model
The Mid West Simon Community Social Grocery aims to open in Limerick City in 2025, and will operate on a social enterprise model. It will enable individuals to purchase groceries at substantially discounted prices. Unlike traditional food banks, a Social Grocery empowers clients by offering them autonomy and choice, essential elements often missing in other food aid programmes.
Additional Support Services
In addition to affordable groceries, the Social Grocery will offer various support services, including:
- Skills and Training Courses: To increase a self-sustainable future our members can participate in diverse training programmes. These courses aim to equip individuals with the skills needed to secure employment and achieve financial stability.
- Money Management Workshops: These workshops are designed to help members manage their finances more effectively, fostering long-term financial independence.
- Advice and Information Services: A range of support services will be available, offering advice on various issues to help members navigate their personal challenges.
- Cooking and Food Skills Classes: To promote healthier eating habits, members can attend cooking classes, which will also improve their food literacy and lifestyle choices.
Anticipated Outcomes
The Social Grocery aims to deliver numerous positive outcomes, including:
- Improved Nutrition: By offering a broader range of dietary options compared to food banks, a Social Grocery can contribute to healthier eating habits and associated physical health benefits.
- Reduced Stigma: The model helps eliminate the stigma associated with receiving free or rationed food by allowing members to shop in a dignified manner, choosing products based on their preferences and dietary needs.
- Social and Economic Benefits: The initiative is expected to generate economic benefits by reducing food waste and creating employment and volunteering opportunities. It also aims to increase employability by alerting members to job and training opportunities.
Community Impact
Research indicates strong community support for the Social Grocery. Of the food bank users surveyed, 93.1% expressed willingness to shop at a social grocery store. They anticipate that the ability to save money on food will positively impact their overall budgets, allowing them to allocate funds to other essentials like clothing, holidays for their children, or paying bills.
